Tool to remove strut tops?
« on: 09 May 2006, 13:30 »
Hey guys

Anybody know where I might get a tool to remove the strut top mounts for my MK2 Golf?

Basically it's a recessed nut (within the plate itself) which is too deep to get at with a spanner and if you attempt to use a socket the damn thing spins all day long as you also need to lock it with an allen key in the centre.  My dad used to have a tool which he made to do the job, a rod welded to the side of the socket so that it could be turned and you could still access the allen key bit through the top of the socket.

Also, have bought G60 top mounts for the fronts.  Anything else I need for the rears as I have just received my coilovers

Thanks in advance

Ian

Just use a standard sunken spanner.

Thats a nice ratchet was it expensive & where did you get it? (oh god whats wrong with me, i'm lusting over tools now ) - Mines at the point where if i try and undo a slightly stiff nut i just end up punching the engine with all my might   my knuckles can't take much more

3/4inch drive is it    nice, plenty of leverage

Those "halfords profesional" tools are quite good actually, really surprised me - I've got a 1/2inch set and its still like new after 4-5 years (+ yes i have used it, plenty )

Halfords have just bought out a new range of ratchets with the centres out so an allen key could fit through the middle. There basically made for doing up nuts on very long threads. However there arent many sockets out for them as they have a different fit because of the ratchet but definetly worth a look.

I bought a deep socket the right size, grinded off 2 sides and whacked an adjustable spanner round it, with an allen key going down the middle.

Home made tools are the best kind
