Stubby Gearstick

Okay guy n girls, seen on a lot of mk2's now the stubby gearstick which looks  :cool: Is it just a case of getting the hacksaw out and chopping off the required amount of rod? But then how do you screw the gearknob back on? Before you call me mr thicky of thicky land, i didn't wanna muck it up and be left with a useless length of rod  :shocked:  :grin:

One of my mates just hacked off a length then rammed an aftermarket knob on however he did have trouble with it coming off in his hand a few times (damn this post if full of unintentional innuendos).
If you're gonna make a decent job of it you need to get a die to match the original thread and cut a new thread on the shaft after you've sawn a bit off.

I was thinking about this too, just if you do cut it down, wouldnt the bigger issue be not being able to put it in gear?

lol just seen it on a lot of golfs in magazines and at shows and thought it looked pretty cool. Don't think i will bother now actually because i don't want to have to end up buying a new gearstick   :rolleyes: Cheers anyway guys.

Hi guys,
bets way to do this is to take the stick out of the linkage and cut it from the bottom, thats what a mate of mine did to my 16v, looks great, feels even better!

 most of the cars you've seen with this are probably running cable change boxes. Particularly the one out of the corrado cos the centre tunnel is higher. My stubby stick looks cool and feels positive.

Theres no way you could cut a 16v one from the bottom as this is where the ball and springs etc are. Oh and if your going to try and use a die to cut a new thread dont do it while still attached to the car as you will smash the plastic housing to pieces!

Mine has been cut down a small ammount, not too much there is enough thread on it to screw the gearknob on, feels nice along with my short shift kit :)
MK4 Golfs (maybe MK3s as well??) don't even have any thread, the knob is secured with a jubilee clip.
