need to do a bit of filling
« on: 08 May 2006, 18:18 »
im half way through doing a flushed plinth tailgate and now need to fill it ready for paint.

Can anyone gve me a bit of guidance, like what filler/fillers should be used. The only experience ive had is with p38 from halfords which cracked on me  im getting it painted professionally so should i leave a layer of filler for the bodyshop to do?

cheers

It mite be worth seeing if you can get a plate welded in that isn't quite flush with the panel and then skim over the top with filler otherwise your going to have a fair bit of filler in there come the end and it could sink or crack

done that already, the panel i welded in is pretty much level with the tailgate now, barely any filler will be needed

Go to a propper shop that supply's the trade with paint and filler e.c.t, they'll have better stuff than you get in Halfrauds and they'll probably be able to advise you the best product and method of using it

first of all give it a skim of fibreglass, this stuff is the best,

you should be able to get it at motorworld, or local motorspares, then after almost sanding it off, gove it a skim of filler, isopon p45 easy sand is available from car spares again, and is ok stuff, then it's a case of high build primer and keep wet flatting it back with some 800grit, if it was bodyshop, it'd just get a coat of stuff called "dolphin glaze", it's like a liquid flexible super fine filler that finishes smooth enough to paint over, top stuff, but doubt you'll be able to get it, unless thru a bodyshop...
