Tax Exempt - Rules?

ive just brought a mk1 golf, its a 1981 and registeried in jan 81, does it make it tax exempt as i thought i was cars at over 25 years old?

Tell me if im wrong!

When the Conservative Government introduced the VED exemption for old cars there was a rolling 25 year cut-off meaning that when your car was 25 years old it got free VED. When the Labour party came into power they fixed the date as September (I think) 1973. If it was made after that you're stuffed I'm afraid.

In the scale of things it doesn't really matter. Who is going to make car decision for the sake of £150/200? I am in the same position with 2 of my Mark ones but I could not really give a sh*t. It would be nice to get free tax and spend the money on the car but, hey, thats life!

I agree completely. Bizarrely though, free VED has a marked impact on the price of stuff like MGBs.
