Automatic choke Sticking

Father in law has a 1.8 91 golf single point injection and the automatic choke is staying on all the time.

I am thinking that there will be a temp sensor that will tell the choke to switch off and this may be the problem.  

If so where about is it.

If you dont think this is the problem please tell what you think is the cause.

Single point injection doesn't have a choke. I think you mean a carb. What do you mean by choke stays on all the time? flap on top of carb stays shut? engine revs high at idle?

I am certain it is a single point injection same as the audis have.

The engine is constantly running at high revs??

If you take the airbox off , does it have a flap at the top?
If it is a carb model then the waxstat needs replacing. Symptoms of a knackered waxstat are :- idles fines when first started cold, then as the engine warms up the idle creeps up to usually about 2000rpm.

Its the mono-jetronic engine and according to the haynes manual you need to check the temperature regulator in the airbox, does this sound correct, or should i look at the coolant temperature sender for th injection side?

Mono-motronic wasn't fitted to the golf mk2 in this country, as far as i know. Whats the engine code?
The temp regulator in the airbox operates the flap that lets hot air in from the exhaust shroud.
If you can tell me the engine code i'll see if i can help some more.

Yeh that sounds right, as far as I know the car is an import direct from Germany and the code is RP.

I would check for vacuum leaks around the injector unit and the inlet manifold. The gasket between the injector unit and the inlet manifold is a common fault.

Is there a simple way of doing this?

With the engine running, gently try to move the top of the injector (plastic air housing) and if the engine speed changes , there is your problem. The "gasket" is a metal rubber metal sandwich, it insulates the injector from heat and vibration from the manifold. Very prone for the rubber to split and let air in.
