What is the Pump Duse?

Hi all - I have just bought a 2001 Y reg Mk4 Golf (1.9 SE TDI PD) - I presume the PD stands for pump duse? What is the significance of this, if any? Sorry I am quite a novice when it comes to some of the specs....
Also, I fitted a new MAF as I was having problems with power at 2500 rpm, problem still appears to be there. Do I need to disconnect and reconnect my battery to reset something? Any ideas??? Cheers Gaz

from the VW site
Volkswagen's Turbocharged Direct injection (TDI) diesels are at the forefront of today's diesel revolution thanks to the Pumpe Düse system.
Pumpe Düse - which means 'pump injector' - overcomes the problem of pressure lost through fuel pipes. The injector and pump are integrated into a single Pumpe Düse unit. Each cylinder has its own Pumpe Düse unit mounted in the cylinder head and operated by the camshaft, injecting fuel directly into the combustion chamber at pressures up to 30,000psi. These high pressures produce a far more efficient blending of the fuel/air mix, precise control of fuel quantities and injection timings.
Benefits of Pumpe Düse include good fuel economy, reduced exhaust emissions, and substantially increased performance with more torque than traditional injection systems. And the Pumpe Düse engine is relatively quiet in operation, with noise levels similar to those of a petrol engine.
