12v Supply for Road Angel

Hi Chaps

I have just invested in a Road Angel (weirdly enuff my old man got one of these gadgets b4 me!) this could possibly save my licence at some stage

Any how what I am after is trying to hide the cable behind the dash which shouldnt be too much of a problem but I want to connect another 12V socket that is hidden away under the dash some where and install a switch so that I can leave the car adapter permanently connected with out having to use the stogi light socket which looks a bit naff.

Anyone know of a plug in adapter to save me having to manually fit wires etc?

Any help would be appreciated as it seems a shame to constantly have the nice brushed alu ashtray cover permanently open.

i got a 3m ciggy adapter from maplin coil style... then used the existing ciggy wire from the road angel navigator...

plugged the coil on into the boot ciggy socket, ran it behind the seat and hid it down the side, then plugged the road angel cable into that, ran it under my seat matt, under the seat, then under the drivers matt, then up the side of the door, and it just plugs in behind the navigator cradle.

easy.

why not chop the plug off the road angel and wire it direct, via a switch? leave some wire and you can always resolder it back on later...

Run it down under the steering wheel, remove the cowling under the wheel and there is a 12v permanent and a 12v ignition under there

ok cool you have givenme a few options my only thought is that the cable is a usb cable and goes through the adapter do you reckon i can wire it in without it?

ah USB connection... is this a road angel or an inforad?

Hi It is a Road Angel compact and come with a usb cable for updating and you use the same cable to connect to a usb/12v adapter in the car, I have a couple of the cables for the updating as my cam uses the same.

My thought were to use the socket on the back of the ashtray if I could find an adapter that would allow me to fit another 12v socket inline and then connect back up to the ciggy lighter, then i could hide all the cables up under the dash.

ah I see... in that case, don't chop the cable off!!

I'd still be modifying the adapter though and hard wiring to that, so much simpler...

I would now take the lighter plug apart, leaving the usb socket intact.
The wireing will be soldered inside the plug for live and earth.  remove them from the plug casing so that you have 2 wires with bare ends(live/earth) and then hardwire that way

Stick some insulating tape around the end of the usb lead and the plug too, this will stop it shorting on anything and also stop it being pulled apart
