Handling questions
« on: 29 April 2006, 14:50 »
I'm a newbie to the Golf scene, but have jumped in head first at the deep end and have got a:

1991 Mk2 Gti 8v - this one's got Jetta front end, OZ Super 15" T's, lowered with uprated suspension.

and a

1991 Mk2 Gti 16v - totally standard and unmodified - driving for years by an old couple and well looked after.

My intention is to use the 8v as a daily driver and keep the 16v garaged for occaional use.  The 8v handles like a dream, you can throw it round corners and it grips grips grips, the steering also feels a lot smoother - i.e. you can use 1 hand the hammer it round a sharp corner without any complaint from the car. Also round town it's a lot easier to drive, turning the steering wheel from full lock one side to the other is totally consistent.
... Now the 16v (totally standard, still got the BBS wheels, etc) seems a lot heavier. When you turn the wheel about 180degrees it all of a sudden feels a lot heavier - nothing major but a lot stiffer than the 8v.

Questions:
Could it be that the tracking/wheel alignment is out on the 16v?  Or perhaps a steering fault?

Without going over the top, whats a good way of stiffening up the suspension on the 16v? I don't want strut braces and all that, perhaps new springs/shocks?  I'm not that clued up about suspension so not too sure what to go for.

Cheers
