Hi All,

As I haven't had my Mk2 very long, I am unsure as to whether I am expecting a little too much from so called "specialists" who supply pattern parts.

In the last week, I have ordered front wishbone bushes from vwspares, an electric window regulator from Euro Car Parts, and a set of brake pads from RallyDesign.

On coming to fit said parts, I was unhappy to find out that despite selecting the right age and model of car; none of the parts were correct for my 1991 8v Mk2.

Is this something I should anticipate/expect from suppliers in the VW scene?  Does it pay to double- and triple-check that you are getting the right part?

Did you order in person, over the phone or on the internet ?

There can be issues if they just go by what the catalogue says should be on your car. I had this problem with the Cat converter on my Mk3. The garage ordered the standard part and got it in, then came to fitting and found it didn't fit my car, because for a short period of time VW put a different part on that model. Had to get one custom made :(

Also if someone has uprated the brakes on the car, then the standard pads may not fit.

Over the production run of the Mk2, various parts changed so that some bits from earlier cars don't fit later cars. But if for example your car had some repair work done later, then the later parts may have been fitted by the garage and now your car won't match the exact factory spec, so parts you order won't fit either.

Later on in the Mk2 production life, the run-out 8v models sometimes got parts from the 16v parts bin too.

Your safest bet is to get the precise part number off the existing part, then ask for it specifically. And check with the retailer that you can bring it back if it doesn't fit.

Wishbones were pretty much the same from day one, your only option being a choice of having them with the bushes of without when you buy replacements.

GTi 8v pads are pretty much the same and a pre 88 16v will have the same size discs & pads as well (239mm).

Late 8v cars as far as having 16v parts, this was only cosmetics like the interior, rear light cluster & BBS RA's.
