how much is my driver worth?
« on: 26 April 2006, 18:46 »
honest answers please...

j reg tornado red 5 door 1.6 driver. 89,000 miles with long mot.

when i got the car, it was pink! i t-cut it 4 times and now it is very red again. slight discolouration on front pass door, but spare TR door available.

the car has had the following work done:
-newly professionally refurbished carb (2e2)
-replacement brake servo
-new dizzy cap, plugs, air and fuel filter and rotor arm
-new coolant o ring
-new cam belt
-new front brake pads
-new rear brake shoes
-new wheel bearings (both rears)

the condition of the car inside and out is very good. it has a very smart interior with no rips on cloth, nor cracks in plastic trim. the outside is also very good. it is polished (with red colour magic) every week, and the car has some nice mk1 steel wheels with centre caps and rim inserts. all tyres are very good. 2 spare tyres are available too.

car drives very nicely, and pulls strongly. the airbox has been cut, so sounds great too.

what are your opinions?

No matter what you do to a Driver it will never have the cache of a GTi - but more fool them really. I have a Driver that I've slowly aquired a few goodies for but I'm under no illusion that the car will be worth a lot more in bits than as a whole because of a badge. That said it does mean you can get a really good 1.8 Mk2 that won't have been caned for a decent price. Mine currently runs a Weber carb and GTi cam/exhaust and it's probably no slower than a 8V. The only thing I won't do is throw money at the shell, anything that can be unbolted can be sold on but spending money on the body isn't worth it - you'll never get it back.

You'll defo get close to the top end of driver money by the sound of it, but it is let down by the fact it is a 5 door and red.  Not that I have anything against 5 doors, but for most dub enthusiasts it makes the car less desireable.  Who lets face it, are the only people who will spend a lot of wedge on an old Driver, and they know how bad red is for fading too, while your average punter has no idea ;)

The problem is also that there are loads around too, finding a looked after Driver is much easier than finding a looked after GTI.

I found a decent driver on my next door neighbour's drive! I've looked for a decent unmolested 8v GTi on and off for about 3 years and never found one with the right combo of being in good nick, sensibly priced, not too modified and not being sold by an idiot who wanted to meet and deal on a car park somewhere.

Wrong wheels and mine's Calypso not snot but it's close enough

not a great deal as a Driver doesn't really have many desirable parts, you cant even give the interior away for example.
