DSG & Cruise Control Failure
« on: 25 April 2006, 03:22 »
Hi all, new to this group, great website. Living in Sydney AU but spent the past 4 eyars in the UK.

Took delivery of my GTI in Nov 05 and very pleased with it. However, recently noticed while returning to Sydney on the freeway that the cruise control failed, I simply couldn't switch it on again and the light wouldn't appear on the display. It returned to normal once I did an engine re-start.

The 2nd more serious problem developed yesterday when the DSG failed whilst in 4th or 5th gear, it seemed to revert to 3rd and I was stuck in this gear all the way home. The gear display just flashed, I switched to sport mode, manual mode and tried the paddles but nothing would fix it. Fortunatley it was slow-moving city traffic and the engine had enough power to start from the lights in 3rd! When I finally arrived home I tried reverse and that wouldn't work either. I managed to park which is a bit of a challange in the wrong gear and no reverse gear! Anyway, I did an engine restart and the DSG came back to life, including reverse..

Anyone else experienced these problems? Reminds me of Windows software...

I have the DSG box & hopefully I won't experience the same problem you faced. The only thing I would suggest in this scenario or if any dashboard lights appears showing a warning, is pull over, switch the engine off for about 1 minute. You would find that the lights disappear from the display or in you case the DSG would reset itself. This would have at least got you home more safely! In any case you should at least contact your dealer for them to carry out a search to ensure the vehicle is safe & no damage has or would be caused.

Well, took the gti in to VW and they looked at the telemetry data and found the fault logs for Cruise Control and DSG failure. They think it might be an electrical fault on the contacts for CC and DSG so they checked/cleaned the relevant connections / checked earthing and reset the log.

Apparently the DSG failure is called 'limp-mode' which causes the gearbox to default to 3rd gear so you can limp home! I stop/restart fixed the problem.

Fingers crossed that it won't happen again. Will keep you posted.

Yes - most autos go into 3rd gear when they go bonkers  - its the best all round gear I suppose
