Paint Question
« on: 23 April 2006, 12:28 »
Hey Peeps,

Can anyone recommend a good place to get paint from as I want to do a bit of the bodywork on me Golf over the next couple of weeks as I am on holiday. I would like to try and keep the original colour (Helios Blue - Colour code I believe LK1H).

Ideally I don't want to travel too far from Andover, but anywhere within an hours drive would be fine.

you'll find any good paint shop wont want you to waste there time buy doing the bodywork yourself.  unless you are good at prep work you'll just be upping the price and wasting your time

you can get aerosols, .5ltr and 1ltr pots mixed up at halfords. As long as the chap on the parts desk is not a complete goobert then you will get the exact match. Just make sure he uses the right code as there are varients. ( i know cos i work there)

Father in Law has told me he can get whatever colour I want so long as I give him the code, he knows a very nice man in a garage who does some of the work for him if he hasn't got time to do it himself. £15 for half a litre, don't sound too bad for two pack, inc activator.

Have started the prep work today, loosening the old bubbled paint and wire brushing and treating the old spots of rust. Hopefully should be applying rust stop primer tomorrow, filler thursday sanding and paint priming friday. New wing this weekend too with a spot of luck.

you cant treat the rust you need to remove it. the anti rust primer wont stop rust in its tracks either. also expect to take 2-3 days rubbing the car down unless you want everyone to see where youve been with the filler. typically i spend 4-5 days prepping cars for paint but i like my cars to look like new.
