Mk2 mods help

Hi there i hope it's ok to post about my golf here it's not a GTI. I have a mk2 1991 1.6 driver carburetor model.

Just a bit of advice needed to get best proformance from it I just recently had a powerflow stainless steel exhaust fitted to the car which helped it pick up a bit. i have been told to put a K+N Filter kit on to the carburetor will this help. also the car is losing power mid throttle i think my uncle said and takes a while to pick up is there anything i need to get looked at my uncle said he thinks it's iver the connections to the carburetor or the carburetor it's self needs replacing. im not to worried if theres not much mods i can do to this engin i know it's very basic but it's my first car and in about 6 months ill be looking in to getting a mk2 GTI.

if anyone can help or has any suggestions that would be cool

get a 1.8 8v gti camshaft in it will fit and make  a good difference

im new to cars aswell so if i was to do that what would that do i dont really know alot about engins if someone could help that be great

aye a camshaft as said. Also getting the carb set up properly would benefit. Then just a good clean of the fuel systems with a treatment a k&n won't do much, just make a noise.

right i think the first thing ill do is get someone to look at the carb for me the pipes going to the carb look pretty old and ill prob just get them replaced as it wont cost much for pips and prob be more reliable. does anyone know of any good carb specialists in the southwest area?

Junk the pierburg carb and get a replacement Weber unit from GSF or second hand.  You may need to get it re-jetted after fitting the after market exhaust.  Depends what you want to spend!

how much this gonna cost if it not alot ill get it done depends on prices really.think i might just get the car working like normal and then get a gti in about 6 months lol saves the hassel.

keep the pierburg and get it properly set up, webers never run right, and frequently cause more problems than they solve.

yea ill kep the pierburg ill have to find someone that knows what there doing if anyone can suggest anyone in the southwest (exeter) area. or if not show me some pics of what to do ill get the carb setup and just bung a k&n on it if it dont help preformance much at least it will make the car sound nice lol.

ill get this done soon when i get some cash but i need to get the gears looked at first as it keeps popping out of 1st,3rd and 5th iver linkage or something worst as it does make a noise in 2nd gear might just need some oil.

The K+N on my Mk2 (see sig) took top speed from 114mph to 120mph. That's with the same sh!te exhaust and a pretty knackered engine. I'll do another comparison when the new box + clutch are on, and possibly a new exhaust too. If that job's n00b-friendly.
