Oil temp debate
« on: 20 April 2006, 18:36 »
Guys,

Can anyone clear a little confusion up for me please.
I have a mk3 8v (i dont think it really matters on 8v or 16v for this question tho)
What should the oil temp read? (in normal running, traffic and fast usage)

Looking through numerous posts there seems to be many differing opinions of what it should be.

I am concerend that mine gets too hot at times.

Its usually around 80-85 - normal use
It has gone as high as 98 in heavy traffic and 91 when booting it.
It never goes over this and the water temp never goes over half way.

if i do have a problem, what can cause hot oil?

many thanks

Over 90 is not so good. Mine hits that now and agin but no higher.

Try a proper VAG oil filter.

the vr6 never hits over 110 ish...

the mk2 gti's when really going use to get to 125!

As far as vw is concerned anything upto 145 is ok, check the manual it says in their!! they say if it gets that how change gear or slow down!

you oil will get hot the water shoudnt go above 100

but the older 1.8 mk2 and 2.0 mk3 gtis do run hot as they are old engine designs!
