With all this talk of puttin a 20v turbo engine in mk2 golfs, i was wonderin if it wouldnt be simpler to just add a turbo to the engine that it already has, i know its a common thing to do in america but not so over here, any idea how much that would cost? i have a 89 16v engine and what other things would need doin, brakes obviously but suspension or anythin like that?

depends on how wild a turbo you're thinking of 'bolting' on. the valvers brakes are fairly decent as it is and uprated shocks aren't a bad thing for improved handling anyway. You'll need to source a inlet manifold with the throttle body opening on the otherside though. there was one on ebay a while back. not sure what it went for, but you don't see many about. You also need to lower the compression ratio, change the 'zorst manifold (obv) and loads of other bits and bobs, but it can be done

But could it be done for between ?500-900, instead of me buyin a cab?

I doubt it unless you do all the work yourself and buy the bits 2nd hand.

It all boils down to how much money you have.

you will need to uprate the bottom end big end bearings and also the compresion ratio. also you will need the ecu remapping to cope with the extra fuel needed!
you will have to do alot of engine work and for the parts your looking at well over 1k its harder to bolt on a turbo to an engine which wasnt designed for it!
basicly alot of work!

How much gain would you get seeing as mine is 139 stock and a 20v is 150 would it work out more than puttint hat engine in or is the work not worth the gains?

yeah but once you have the 20vT the potential for more power..... 400 quid to get you to around 200... lovely

the 20v is a newer engine - so it's gonna be better than your wheezy old KR block in comparison.

Turbo Technics used to do a conversion kit for a turbo for the Valve and for the 8v.

The only probs with these kits is sourcing a manifold - as most have been put into trees.

Bottom line  - all the work required to your current engine would be uneconomic when compared to just swapping in a 20v.

So basically save up another ?1000 and stick a 20v engine in then   sommat to do over summer lol
