Gear Linkage Kit?
« on: 16 April 2006, 16:26 »
Hello,

Apologies in advance if this posted in the wrong section (excuse is I am a newbie). Just bought a 1992 Mk2 Gti 8v a couple of days ago. Car seems to be in reasonable condition but as it was an ebay purchase
and relatively cheap there will no doubt be a few things to fix on it.

My first problem encountered is that the gears do not seem to engage that well (especially first gear). There does not appear to be any crunching when changing gear and all the other gears seem to engage reasonably OK although there does appear to be a bit of play in the gear lever - does this mean that I need to investigate in a gear linkage kit to resolve the problem?

Yes investigate the linkage first...  If you look in the maintenance child board thing in this mk2 section RubJohnny has done a nice little write up of what to look for and how to improve it.

And welcome to the forum!

Welcome Peacher,  Was in the same shoes as you some time ago, Rubjohnny's  link in the child forum is excellent and all credit to him,  the linkage is easily bought and replaced and makes a superb difference to gearchange,  one thing i would also change is the weighted gear linkage off a Mk 3 golf,  £5.00 s/hand or £14.00 new from VW

If it is a 90 mph per hour wind and you drive your car at 90mph downwind, if you stick your head outside would you feel the wind?

Thanks for the replies - is really helpful.

Just one other question - where is the best place to buy the kit, ebay, gsfcarparts.com etc?
