In order to remove the damaged decal and then replace with new, I first removed the rear windscreen (I was replacing it with one in which all the heated demister elements were working) in the tailgate under which part of the decal sits. I  then used a hairdryer to heat the vinyl and gently pull away. You then have the laborious job of trying to remove the glue left behind using meths on a spongie.

I then put on a new decal and then the glass which sits over it together with the new rubber seal.

Some do not bother with replacing the decal and some use textured black paint as a replacement. I am trying to source some of the same paint in order to replace the sill decals on my 86 mk2.

So wait for a warm day and the job will be easier !

get it warm to soften the sticky, with a hot air gun (if your careful) or kettles of hot water, then once you start to peel it should come off in big chunks. then any excess sticky get off with petrol or something.

i think the best way is to replace the boot with another boot....... get one from a Driver or some thing with out the black sticker and if you want the OEM GTI spoiler swap the glass over. that way you get a boot that has the same colour paint all over and not a GTI boot with an out line of darker paint that hasnt been affected by the sun light where the sticker was.
