mr rub , why is that anyway?, about the lack of rear silencer, all the other ones have one, also i noticed in the haynes manual it has it the other way round, it shows diagrams 20.4a and 20.4b with the rear silencer on the 1600/1800 exhaust system and not one on the smaller size engine, whas all that aboot

I dunno really, I guess its because the 1.6 doesn't make as much noise?  The setup shown for 1.3 & 1.5 is what my 1.6 had on it, though all that soon went in the bin when I got the scorpion system on there ;)

hi boys i know this is a bit off subject but i want to fit a new gear linkage to my driver because its quite stiff to get it into 1st and second is a bit crunchy, was just wonderin the best place to get it done, would a vw garage be real pricey, i did look at rubjhonnys instructions in maintainance section but im not much of a mechanic. so was wonderin if anyone knows where to take it. i live in weymouth dorset.
any help would be cool cheers guys

anything done at a vw garage is conna cost alot, theyd probably charge you a few hundred to change a headlight bulb, if you aint comfortable trying it yourself and dont have a mechanic buddy then your best off going to a normal garage and im sure a good strait mechanic will sort you out for cheaper than a vw expert super wizz kid ma jobby, im not familiar with gear linkages myself and i know buggger all about mechanics too but you may find that its easier than it looks, give it abit of planning and you could probably do it yourself and save yourself money and learn a thing or two, ive learnt loads that way

nope, you need to use a 1.8 driver downpipe as this will mate to the 1.6 manifold and is the GTI bore at the other end.
If you want to use a GTI downpipe you have to fit a GTI manifold as well.

do that one, i garentee you wont get it closed again without it blowing unless you put a gti manifold on, but if you do, tell me how!

Yes the GTI 8v manifold is a direct bolt-on fit.  However, be prepared to remove your head as some of the bolts/studs may shear off and require drilling out.
Not really that hard though, me & me dad had the head off, stud drilled out and head refitted & car running in a day :)
