Oil Seal
« on: 28 November 2003, 16:22 »
 :(Mk 2 8V  165000 m
seem to have oil leaking into the clutch housing
and causing the clutch to slip.
Lot of oil leaking underneath.
Is this likely to be engine side or gearbox side?
How bad is this?
Is it a cheap fix or terminal?

Gear oil or engine oil?. Engine oil is prob the crankshaft seal, gear box is the 1st motion shaft seal, or more likely the clutch pushrod bush and seal are worn.
Check the engine breather in the rocker cover is clear, if it is blocked, it will build up pressure in the crank case and push oil out of the seals.

Just as steve says smell the oil, gearbox oil smells rough! If its pissing out may be crank rear oil seal.

Yep, good advice above ^
Looks like that gearbox is coming off in the very near future. Whether the leak is engine or gearbox side, its a cheap fix if you can do it all yourself........expensive bit will be the new clutch that you're going to need now.

thanks guys,
got it to the local specialist garage this week and they found
a big hole in the gearbox !!!!.
Not too painfull, recon box, and as the clutch was only
6 months old and not too badly contaminated it
was kept. Couple of hundred all in.

Rivet out of the diff punched a hole in the case more than likely. Better check your diff when you do the rebuild Rich.

Yep mine done exactly that and I had to get a rebuilt box, You should have noticed puddles of gearbox oil under the car well before it started to slip, mine lasted over a year before the bellhousing went and pissed oil on the clutch.

make sure you drill them out and put a bolt kit in.
