Youre starter motor isnt knackered. The noise you can hear is the solinoid sticking when you start the car.You can fix this by cleaning it out.My GTI does this intermitantly and has done for 6 months.I just keep forgeting to get it fixed

When you turn the key to start the car, the solenoid on the starter motor moves the motor toothed drive wheel onto the engine flywheel - the teeth interlock and the starter turns the flywheel, when you release the key the solenoid then pulls the motor toothed drive wheel off the flywheel. If your solenoid is sluggish or sticking, it doesn't pull the motor drive away in time, so the motor starts spinning at high speed with the flywheel or rubs against the flywheel making the noise.

IIRC you have to buy the solenoid with the starter motor combined.

your starter motor isnt knackered mate so ignore the baove comments... if you do a search for starter motor problems you may find this is a common mk4 fault on most models..... the brass bush in the engine block that the starter flings forward into gets worn/burred... sometimes making it tight, there fore it will hold onto the starter gear for a few seconds longer than it should, therefore you get the runover 'whiozz/wheeerrr' noise for a few seconds after starting... the way to solve this is to remove the starter and use the correct tooling to remove the brass bush and hammer home a new one... job done...

replacing the starter motor will often make the noise/effect worse etc as the brass bush isnt worn to that particular starter.....

hope this helps...

or you could replace your starter like the above peeps have said and the prob get worse or the same and your out of pocket.. the choice is yours...

Say bye bye

Mine does something similar, makes a TRRRRRR noise when it starts for a few seconds. Wouldnt of thought about looking into starter problems i put it down to something to do with the oil/engine noise  :undecided:
