Car for the wife - mk3 16v or VR6?

Current mk2 gti driver myself, started out with a mk3 1.4 SE, my wife thought it was a bit heavy to drive and clutch stiff too.
Opinions relating to title most welcome. 5-door a must!

But seriously, it all depends on what it'll be used for I reckon?!?
VR6 is pretty thirsty fuel wise i've heard!
