Bro's mk3 making funny noises
« on: 10 April 2006, 18:49 »
Making a strange rumbling noise, more like a low pitched hum than anything else. Alters with speed not revs, so guessing its something to do with the wheels not the engine, my first guess was cv joint needs greasing but havent heard of them making such a noise, tho dont know what likely early symptoms of cv joint trouble are!

Any help would be much appreciated, sorry I cant be more specific on the symptoms but only wnet out for a quick drive to have a listen.

Cheers,

Sounds more like one of the CV joints, as wheel bearings tend to squeal when they are on the way out. if it is a cv is should knock when on full lock going round a bend or owt.

Hmm, any decent way of telling if its wheel bearing or cv? Didn't notice any knocking, have had cv go on my car and didnt see any of the same symptoms, which would make me think wheel bearing, any good check, like wheel wobble etc, to tell if it is that? And how hard a job is that on a mk3?

Defo sounds like a wheel bearing mate.  I have a worn one at the front and its droning and humming and gets louder and higher piched the faster you go.  Common problem on golfs of all marks and ages in my experiance.
