replacing top mounts and bump stops????
« on: 04 April 2006, 13:54 »
Hi, Ive just bought a GMAX suspension kit (springs and struts). I was advised by some people on here to replace the front top mounts with genuine volkswagen ones and also the bump stops front and back. I phoned volkswagen about ordering these and they need to know exactly what I want as apparently the front top mount come seperately as bearing and rubber. Can anyone tell me what I need? also do I need to replace these 4 bump stops (i know they usually need cutting down anyway)?? Any advice would be welcome. How much are these items usually from volkswagen? Thanks (oh yeah and the car is a 97 golf gti 16v)

Your existing bumpstops should be ok if they're in ok condition. All they do is protect the damper if you bottom the suspension out, on say a massive pothole.
If your topmounts are knackered, then replace them, but as long as they are not split/miss-shapen you should be fine to keep em.

Probably will only need to replace the rear bumpstops. Bump stops are fitted to stop the suspension compressing too far, and so to prevent the wheel hitting the arch.
Replace both front top mounts as well, get both bits, the rubber mount and the bearing.
You should probably shorten the front bump stops by the amount you are lowering it by, otherwise the suspension will have very little movement.

Right , so I need 2 new front top mounts (both bearing and rubber) and 4 new bump stops (front ones definately need chopping down a bit to allow a bit of spring compression)? Thanks for the help.

Get a new set of G60 top mounts and fit them as with lowered suspension it takes more punishment so might as well do it whilst it's in bits also that way you don't have to strip the old strut to remove it.

Probably got lost in the "Great Crash of 08
