Sprints & Hillclimbs in a Mk2 GTI???
« on: 30 April 2003, 20:07 »
Just wondering if anyone has any experience of sprinting or hillclimbing a mk2 (mine is a 1990 16v), and whether they provide good competition for the Pug 1.9 GTIs and Astra GTE 16vs that seem more common...?  Interested in getting involved, but haven't graduated from spectating yet.

Mk2's are a tad heavy compared to Astra GTE's, Pug 205's, etc.
To be honest and i hate to say it, Mk1 Gti would be best bet for hill climb or sprint.
Even if you stripped the Mk2 out, it would struggle in standard form against stripped out Astra GTE's i think, my old GTE was flippin rapid compared to my Golf! 1.9 Pugs are also rapid due to light weight tin boxes.
Build a twin-engined Gti, one 16v lump in back (powering rear wheels) and another 16v in front (powering front wheels)?!
Or even better, twin engined G60?!

My mate just bought an ex-hillclimb car.  A porsche 944 turbo....I wouldn't want to race that in a golf...

if your gonna do hillclimbs in it, first thing id invest in is getting your gearbox rebuilt with the diff bolt kit, otherwsie it'll explode on about the 2nd run

early small bumper 16v's are not as heavy as late spec models
