Rusty arches!
« on: 31 March 2006, 18:25 »
Don't worry, not on the dub! Just inherited a nova sr from my ma in law. Not a bad car really (reaches for the burberry) . It's got bad corrosion on the wheel arches though. Question is, whats the best way to fix it? I've just sanded off rust in the past and then painted it again, but it usually just starts rusting again from underneath. How do I kill it for good? Or is my little nova just destined to flake away silently? I am planning to sell it and do up my rocco with the proceeds, so there's a good enough cause!

you can probably get a replacement wing or the edge of wing, then cut off the old rusty one and weld on new one

put the xe engine in it

Ah, a closet nova fan eh? I should have said - the rust is on the rear arches - the front ones are fine. Are the back panels bolt on wings or not? I'm thinking no...
Cheers!

XE? 2.0? 1.4 is nippy enough, so anything much bigger is probably pant spoiling?

I'd rather save up and re-do my scirocco. Quite like to do what this geezer has done, but not sure the welding and stuff is gonna be doable. Gotta be better than a nova though eh?

apparently you cut them out like the fronts and you can buy a repair panel arch

Best bet would be sand it back to the metal, beat the rusted are inward a little, ask your local paint supplier for a rust killer, then a thin slither of non fibre glass filler sand it back (the finish is in the prep work and the more time you spend the better the results) dust it with primer, sand back and then spray it miny airbrushes are quite good as the colour matching is less noticeable to the eye, and then heres the best nit get shot of it fast! its only a Nova Im sure there will be a young lad who has some surplus blue bonnet lights that will want it!

Harsh but fair me thinks and then use the cash and put it towards a polo if you need to have another car.

Just remember dont spend too much on the repairs as it is an old car and people should expect it not to be perfect!

Or you could do as i have seen, either paint on with a brush some hammerite (in black so it looks like a wheel arche extension) or the pikey way just put some duck tape over it and forget it was ever there!

Only jesting with you mate good luck with the repair if you want to get hold of a cheap airbrush got machine mart they got one for about a tenner.
