GTI or NOT?
« on: 28 March 2006, 15:59 »
I have been offered a Golf GTI 2.0 2002, however the badge at the rear of the car says just "2.0" and the engine just says "2.0", it is registered as a GTI but how can i be sure ?

i'm not too hot on mk4's but i think they did the 2.0 naturally aspirated gti and the 1.8 turbo. the 2.0 isn't much cop in the performance stakes as i'm lead to believe... seek out a 1.8t 180bhp model and there is alot more tuning potential. if thats what floats your boat. :undecided:

I think that some of the late 2.0 GTI's were badges as 2.0's as the ones that were badges as GTI's were (as joe said) the 1.8 20v's both turbo and non turbo.

Some dealers but GTI badges on them some didnt, so just like with most of the mark 4 badging there is no real consistency.

exactly right. The cars came into the country badged as 2.0 and the dealers changed the badges. Unless it's an estate model!.  Also, the only mark 4 Golf Hatchbacks with the 2.0 engine were GTIs. (some say in name only though...)

I just got a 2.0 and came badged with the 2.0 and is now happily badged as a gti. As they all say above not great performance (115bhp compared to 150-180bhp from a 1.8t) but i drove one and liked it plus much lower insurance.

I drove a 2.0 (GTI) last firday from leeds to liverpool and i liked it tbh, never going to set the world alight, but had enough grunt at top end to just put my foot down in 5th and make good progress, and had enough low down grunt to get me up to speed. Plus i loved the arm rest, just sat back and relaxed!

get a 150bhp 1.8T model. you'll get more of a power increase and it'll be cheaper to buy than the 180 versions. you're gonna have to change the turbo to get proper power anyway on both engines.
