If they have done too much damage to the dash - they may have damaged the PCB on the back of the instrument cluster. If the earth to the indicator indication bulb is damaged, then this could cause a short and stop the indicators from working properly. However it will allow the Hazards to operate. the Hazards require some independance from the indicators as they need to work with the ignition off.
I don't own this anymore - I just can't be arsed to change the picture

You could have hit the nail on the head! As the indicator light is on very dimly all the time the ignition is on! Take it its quite easy to fix once you have the insturment panel off?

If you have a half light on the dash then I think we found the problem. Take a look at the PCB on the back of the pod, and see if you can see a damaged track - then just solder a hard wire replacemnt into its place - taking care not to damage the PCB, if there is no damage, then you will have to trace the earth for this light back through the PCB to its plug, and back from there. - best of luck

I still think you have an earth problem as you have a half light indication on your dash indicator light, if it was a relay, the light should be on or off, and if it was just making contact and releasing then the light would probably flicker and you may hear the relay buzzing

when i bought my golf the indicators worked occasionally,
I also noted that the indicator light on the dash glowed dimly.

I changed the indicator arm/multi-switch.  Now works perfect.

It maybe a similar prob - if so you can pick up the arm from GSF car parts for ?11.95 for an 88  (?27 for the 90 onwards, gutted!)

or try the scrap yard.....

I would use a multimeter to check your getting correct current at the fusebox. then check the switch and see what you have there.

A lot of older cars have problems with the switches and although sometimes electrical cleaner helps are to far gone and need replacing.
