Rear suspension question
« on: 26 March 2006, 11:28 »
Ive had a squeaky noise from the rear end of my car for ages and i always thought it was something in the boot... anyway yesterday it got worse and the rear drivers side suspension collapsed!
I stripped it down and found the top spring cup thingy (sits between spring and body) was rotten! The spring had pushed through the cup and was pressing against car body.

How much are these cup things and wheres best place to get them? Is it VW part?
Can you buy uprated ones cause im trying to replace everything with uprated when the originals need replacing.
I LOVE THE SOUND OF CARBS IN THE MORNING

just had the same prob when fitting my new lowering kit.

£7ish inc vat from dealer, or slightly cheaper from GSF, depends on how quick you need it!

Hi, had this on mine a month ago and am looking now at the GSF invoice - They're called '45722D top spring plate-re' and are £4.85 +vat each and they're pretty good quality, get new bumpstops at the same time. Although my drivers' side had collapsed I decided to do the passenger side at the same time as it looked pretty rotten. It actually turned out to be in a worse condition because the bumpstop had jammed on to the top of the rusty strut plunger and rusted it away to about 4mm dia and seized on all the spacers. I had to hacksaw through the strut to get them off! I ended up getting two new shocks (£31.50) as well. You had best order the lower of the two top rubber mounts as well, although they don't look to bad, when you compare the old with the new they are quite distorted, the top ones don't seem to wear much. If you have better luck than me and your shocks come off OK its a pretty cheap fix. Just make sure you get all the spacers etc back in the right order and watch out for a tiny thin metal ring that goes on the strut below the first washer. Its so small and skinny I can't believe that's all that stops the strut top punching up into the car. : Good luck!
