How more addictive can these cars be
« on: 26 March 2006, 09:59 »
About 2 months ago I bought my first gti, dammit I am becoming totally obsessed with it. I wont even drive the main family car any more, I would rather feel every rattle in the road with my freezing cold air blowing from the heater.
I have even blagged my wife into coming along with me to the two northern golf gti shows this summer !
Will it get any worse?

Probably, I have an 03 bimmer 330i sitting on the drive and since I bought the 16v six months ago I go anywhere at every opportunity in it (except for business). The wife and kids think I'm mental. I think its down to the mixture of fairly raw non interfered with motoring with that added hint of 'suspense' as to whether you will actually make it to where you are going!  Also it keeps me busy at the weekends, there's normally something to be done. The wife & kids say I have been in a much better mood since I got it as well?!

yeh sometimes i consider flogging my GTI but cant think what i'd replace it with??

I like the way everyone seems to see the Mk2 GTI as a performance reference!

It seems everyone knows/remembers 'what it'll do'. I love a good race and am always getting chased by pretty much anything with wheels and peeps are always surprised at the pace of an old GTI. Obviously the mk2 is outclassed by modern 'performance' stuff but its more than that. Old enough to be a classic, new enough to fix on the cheap and the iconic image is timeless. As for addictive, my 2.0 16v loves a good A303 tail-touch-tag-race*

* "hmm thats a standard Mk2 Golf GTI 16v...we are going uphill..its overtaking a wagon...lets make a fool of him with the huuuge torque of my new TDCI Vectra...and...whoa that cant be right??" Fun everytime

If only my Volkswagen was as reliable as everyone else's...

I really should stop driving the golfs I'm not insured on lol. The F reg is the one I'm suppose to be driving, but the other 2 are just more fun! must stop it!

I only bought my 8v GTi Mk2 a couple of week back whilst I'm rebuilding my Vectra SuperTouring V6...but I fooking love the Golf.  Will be driving it everyday soon, so looking forward to driving an older car again.  Already bought new wheels, stereo and CD changer etc for it

Only thing is its no where near as quick and doesn't have a big enough boot to fit a pram in (for twins!).  I like having A/C and traction control too and the knowledge that the car will stay together in a prang.

Even having thoughts of selling the Vectra when I've finished doing the work on it and buying a 1.8T Mk4/5 Golf GTi!

There have been a few times that I thought about thrashing the little f**ker with a thorny bush. Some VAG only parts can be really expensive. My Mk2 G60 Syncro has AC and blew a hole in the original Glader to Cooler pipe...£321!!! Samco wouldnt even quote me for a one off!
