Help Choosing Next car
« on: 20 March 2006, 12:37 »
Hi All,

I currently have a 92 MKII 16V Golf with a 2.0L ABF engine. Keep thinking that it time to move on. Wanted a VR6 but my mechanic keeps on saying that my current car is better. He keeps going on about the VR's fuel consumption & that the performance is not that great for a 2.8.

I live in London & currently my MKII averages around 25mpg (MFA Figures!) - most of my driving is in London. Is my mechanic right? What sort of average  MPG would you expect from a VR in London? Are they not really suitable as city cars?

Should I stick with my MKII for now & wait till i have a bit more cash for something like an Audi A3 1.8T or Leon Cupra R?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Well i went from a 16v KR Jetta to a VR AAA Vento and you can feel the difference for sure.  The torque is better the sound is great and it was so smooth.  But a mate had a Mk2 ABF running 183bhp and it just ran rings round it, (in the Golf+ mag as the fastest NA 16v).   The VR would drink fuel like it was going out of fashion (seen 8mpg on MFA, best ever was 30mpg) and if any think went wrong its big dollars to fix.
Now ive got a Mk1 running a 9A i dont think i would go back to a VR cos the power difference is not worth it.
I do miss the sound though something rotten but when the 16v is screaming it sends a tingle down your spine.
I would say stick with MK2 as i think its better than a VR.

thanks for the advice - now I'll look at getting the MK2 up to 180BHP
