hello all,
thought il introduce myself,
recently bought a 96black3dr golf gti anniversary model. isnt the 16v but 8v. got 84k on the clock which im kinda pleased about and good detailed history.

havnt managed to get up pics yet but will hope so soon.

had a service oil and air filters, spark plugs, fully synthetic oil, water and antifreeze changed, But a few problems my front drivers side electric window needs sorting out, and read a few posts, my rev limiter or rev counter kicks in at 5k which im kinda curious about. Otherwise the cars all original and very clean no rust, dents jus need a black t cut and looks showroom.

Still have the original wheel corrosion which i need to address. Any recommendations on where i go for this? was thinking diamond cut or black chrome or do u rekon i shud keep it original colour to maintain price or should it matter??

Any other things which i need to check on b4 anything could potentially go wrong??

the coil can go at anytime and without warning! so be prepared...

also the black ecu relays can give trouble so its probibly worth getting a new grey one for a £10

other than that everythings ok, except the vw gearbox sms problem.....

the pinsionshaft inside the diff can come out bashing a big hole in the gearbox and covering the clutch with oil!

this is caused by the pinionshaft being held in place by 2 bigger rivets on the crownwheel....

vw use to use 2 circlips one on either end of the pinion shaft!

but some reason they did it this way and have now a major design flaw in the gearboxes!

notice that the pinion has a groove for the circlips which vw stopped using!

thanks animaniac really appreciate the help and the pictures. Will look into those problems further.
Just looking back on the service history it says

17/4/03 - nearly 3 yrs ago exactly
Distributor
ign coil
timing belt   was changed that was speedo at 73638

Now shows 85K  today approx

The guy used it as his second or 3rd car he said  as for the low mileage. ( i believe him i think!)

Should i still look into it or worry about it again?
Plus do u rekon when the distributor was changed this has effected the 5000rpm rev limiter kick in?

Thanks Again
