High revs
« on: 19 March 2006, 17:36 »
I'm sure I've seen a thread about this before but can't find it anywhere, anyway....

Whilst trying to find out where my car is letting in water ive now discovered loads more things that need fixing!! (as usual)....

Whilst checking sunroof drainage holes (clear) I noticed that the nearside rear spring is compleatly squashed and twisted. I thought my steering felt a bit funny!

Horn no longer works (obviously this happened when I had the fuse box sorted (or not sorted) as it worked before)

I think the water is coming in around the steering column as the rubber boot is split. Pulled the carpets up and there was water in the channels that go from the front of the car to the back. Checked scuttle - all clear.

And, the wierdest thing that happened was that while it was sat on the drive, something happened to the revs. At idle the revs are 2000!! Usually just under 1000. Drove round the block and they never dropped below 2000 and breaks felt funny too! My boyfriends dad adjusted the accelerator cable and the revs dropped to just above 1000, but it still sounds higher than usual.

Anyone have any ideas? about any of these probs? Will my car be safe enough to drive on the motorway tomorrow?

Thanks guys

Gem.

mine was running at 2000 for ages, fixed this weekend, took the water bottle off and at the rear of the induction manifold there is some plug with two wires going to it, one had been cut in half, sorted out and now the car runs at 1000! brill!

The O-Ring on the tick-over screw gets really hard with age and stops holding the screw in place so the tickover goes all over the place - up to about 2000rpm so thats worth a look   if you can turn the screw with your fingers its fooked   :smug:

The boot on the steering column is meant to have a split in it, to help with fitting i suppose  just make sure its pushed in as far as it goes  :nerd:

Does the horn work when you're driving along - my horn doesn't work when stationary unless i rev the engine, no idea why but i had the same problem with a couple of previous mk1's so i guess its common.

:undecided: this spring thing sounds dodgy!!! - are you saying you're shocks are knackered or are you talking about a spring on the sunroof (how would that affect steering?)

Haha  Yes thats what it sounds like! I was looking under the wheel arches to see where the drainage holes for the sunroof came out and thats when I saw the spring! Its all squashed - f*cked basically! Horn doesn't work when engine is running

With your idle, deffo check for vaccuum leaks i.e. as already mentioned idle screw. Sounds like unmetered air is getting in.

Had something very similar on my clipper - spoke to a friend of a friend who advised to replace the 'wax-state valve' I think. Anyway, got the bit, mate replaced it and it works perfectly now, starts up idles at approx 1200, then after 5 secs drops to 900, then sits at 700 after about 30 secs - hot or cold.

N/A on injection but yes a common problem on the carbs as they build up the mileage
