1998 1.8 Turbo qns
« on: 18 March 2006, 20:02 »
Hi,

I've just bought a 1998 MK4 1.8 turbo with 40k miles. Just a few qns if any of you can help.

1. I have been searching the forum and have found that most ppl replace the cambelt at around 60k miles, considering only the age of the car and a full VW s/h and no previous cambelt change is it time to change the cambelt?

2. Had RAC inspection done on the car, said there was minor oil seepage from the gearbox that could be fixed by a service, any other problems that could arise from this?

3. My service is due soon. Is the VW service worth it on an 8 year old car? Previously owned a Honda and the dealers raped me on service costs, I would assume its the same with VW. I've used an AA approved service centre Nationwide Autocentre (12 month/12k Guarantee) on my previous cars and both the services (customer and car) have been excellent. Not sure if there is any VW specific things that requires only a VW dealer service.

Any help on the above much appreciated.

I have not yet bought a Golf so not entirely familiar with them, however given the age of your car if it was me I would have the belt replaced for peace of mind, timing belts generally have both a mileage and age restriction.

Personally there is no way I would pay main dealer servicing costs once out of warranty - usually a high price for low service, find a good independent garage or if competent, do it yourself.
