my m8 had a similar problem about a month ago... his was a lambda sensor... the part costs approx £70...but the total bill from the main stealer was £140..

sorted it out nicely...

gotta get it properly diagnosed first though...

hope it helps

Is it possible to replace them your self or does it require specialist equipment?

I took the one on my GTi-6 off to get my de-cat on, but being French, the lil f**k*r had welded itself to the cat!!!  Glad I got it off though, as a new lambda would've been £100 from Pug!

I'd imagine it would be easy enough if you could get the car in the air, though. If not, you got axel stands?

With the Pug, you just had to take the undertray off, then just undo it (in theory,) with a 22/23mm spanner.

Ive just taken mine off when i changed my cat piece of pi55 to remove. the wiring plug is in a black box thats held to the car by 2 x black plastic nuts undo them and unplug it (so you don't twist the wires when you undo the sensor) then i just used a big adjustable spanner (not sure what size it was) to undo it dead easy i did it on axle stand as i don't have access to a ramp and I'm no mechanic
