Suspension advice Please
« on: 23 November 2003, 19:26 »
My car is a 91 Mk2 16v
I try to do most of the maintenance on my car myself so want a bit of advice.
The Front suspension has developed a knock sound when braking and accelerating hard and i believe it is the front suspension top mounts
So I wish to replace them with passat items as they should be the same size but stiffer due to it being a heavier car. Just wondered if anybody had done this before and what is involved?
Also my bump stops are perished so I want to replace them at the same time. Is it worth changing these to polyurethane items?
The suspension is Bilstien Lowered (40mm) springs and dampers that have been on the car for about 3 years
Thanx in advance!

Knocking when braking or accelerating may be a problem with the bushes on the wishbone. Check the rear one and the ball joint. The mk2 top mounts are up to the job when they are in good condition, are the Passat ones different?. Just fit new standard bump stops, you should not be on them if the suspension is set up correctly.

I think the passat mounts are the same as the golf, g60 mounts are tougher. I would go along with what steve said, check the wishbone bushes and suspension balljoint for free play. Also jack up the car until the suspension is on full hang and try and rattle the spring, if there is any movement then the mounts are worn.

I would also check the shocks on your car. Looks to me like they have burst as you have worn bump stops.

I also would change the top mounts for G60 ones.

Had the same problem  :) Good luck

Thanks guys
I will check the rest of the bushes st the same time
but at my service last week they said that the front top mounts are worn and the bump stops are perished all round
This could be because before the bilstien set up, some monkey owned the car and chopped the springs so it sat on the floor

Dangerous move by chopping the springs! :o
Best to change all the parts in one go if you have the cash. It will make a BIG diffrence later on

Good luck with the work.

I've already changed the dodgey springs for a set of bilstien lowered springs and dampers, but I think that these problems have arisen from the ropey chopped springs.

Anybody done top mounts and bump stops before?
Just wanna know whats involved?

You need to remove the struts, compress the springs, then undo the top nut that holds the mount on.
