horses for £500??
« on: 14 March 2006, 21:23 »
How many extra horses can I get for £500???
What BHP can a std. valver take without getting fancy new pistons etc... and without blowing it up!

I fancy an engine rebuild in the near future and might buy a 16v engine to leave with someone to do the work then have it fitted into my valver. (having said that - where in cumbria can I get this type of work done any one know???) I'm not prepared (and don't have!) to pay the £2k THAT tsr want for a new engine!
What sort of work should I be getting done - port and polish 2.0ltr bottom end etc....

what should I expect to pay to get a 160bhp ish output?

cheers

Best bang per buck would be a 2.0 16v bottom end, either an ABF from a MK3 Golf or SEAT, or an Audi (9a?).
Can easily get one for less than £500 if you shop around.  The MK3 ABF can get 170bhp with only an engine chip & remap (VW limited the MK3 16v from the factory to stop people buying em over the VR6)  So the MK2 16v should get at least that with a polished head :)

Rowlers, ask the guys at Autovolks in Carlisle, they may have some good contacts.

There is a place in Lancaster, just as you leave the motorway at J34 who is very very good by reputation (although he's also very slow: you have to tell him you need the engine back in two weeks for an event or similar or it'll sit for months!). He's done several race engines for a colleague of mine but I can't remember his name off-hand. Prices are pretty good too from what I was told.

I contacted autovolks a few weeks ago, would only reccommend a genuine VW replacement engine and don't do rebuilds! did reccommend someone in Lancaster but didn't know the name!

I'm going to take it there sometime soon though, for full tune up.

The 9a engine is the same height as the 16v kjet so is preferable over the abf which is a tall block so needs a fair bit of fannying to make it fit apparently.
see my post in the mk2 section for some ideas.

Lancaster engines possibly?  They have the best rep in the country for rebuild work.  Don't think they fit stuff though

They have a good reputation also I have heard good things about them, more for the enthusiast who likes to get greasy and spread an engine around they're garage on  a weekend you send the parts they repair and machine them then send it all back. It's the way I will go with mine I think the best way to learn how it works is to take it to bits and then try to put it back together!
