i would say compramise the two choices and get a mark 2........16valve!!!
I agree matey a mk2 16v is the best all round golf, it's got the power, chuckability (technical term that), looks cool as is lighter and in general you can't compare a mk2 8v to a mk3 16v as they are different cars entirley.
Also that qoute is whack,

The difference with Adrian Flux and Volksworld insurance between a mk2 8 valve and mk2 16 valve was £30 seriously I thought a 16v was out of the question.
Try getting tpf+t as unless you have an agreed valuation fully comp is imho a luxury not needed on old cars.
