mk2 8v or mk3 16v
« on: 13 March 2006, 19:17 »
iv been looking at insurance quotes and basically, im stuck between getting a mk2 8v and a mk3 16v.  I know the mk2 is more of a drivers car, and im young which is probably what i'd more want to do, but the mk3 is a bit more luxury?  i think their both about the same on performance, im after something pretty reliable and quick

can anyone else help?

what sort of mpg are you looking in each?? and how reliable are the 2ltr 16v engines?? cheers

Can't think of a funy or whitty comment

I'd say mk3 as well, but I haven't driven a mk2 so just guessing there's a sufficient difference. Certainly plenty of pull throughout the rev range in the mk3, just loads above 4k!

I'd go for the mk3. Easily hike the power up with simple mods and it'll be loads quicker than the 8v. The 16v will wipe the floor with it :)

MK3 everytime !

8v -  solid, proven, reliable engine. Not that slow !

16v - quicker, not as reliable as 8v, costly to fix

Why are you choosing between the Mk2 8v and the Mk3 16v ? They'll be very different values and cost different amounts to insure.
My old Mk3 16v was loads of trouble, in 9months it cost me over a grand in repairs, new dizzy, new cat. converter, electric faults, kept stalling, and would have needed a new clutch, if I'd kept it.
That said it was 150bhp of fun, and more luxorious.
But the Mk2 16v I had after that was much more fun to drive, no electrical problems, very quick, needed a new clutch, but after 155k, that's not bad.

So, if you want luxury and fun, I'd go for a late Mk2 16v.

A mk3 huh, you into sailing then?   :lipsrsealed:

I had the same dilema when i got my 8v mk2, tried a mk3 tdi an 16v and then went for the mk2, i rekoned just slightly more fun. + the cult factor.

Why would the 16v be less reliable?

I'd say in the long run the mk3 would be less trouble as it's new and would have less miles and abuse.
