Rough running so...
« on: 13 March 2006, 19:16 »
changed a few bits.

Few months ago some times when I pulled away in my 1500 gl she would jerk once maby twice. so changed:Plugs, leads, dizzy cap rotor arm.

Runs alot better but some times does it, but can only just notice it.

With all this bad weather, esp the rain shes been cutting out and not running right. Put some dw in the dizzy to get rid of any damp. Still no joy

Moved on to the points yesterday, put new ones in. Now shes not cutting out but the idle is all over the place. from say 500- 2500 rpm also running hot

Gonig to check the timing tommorrow with a light.

Any other ideas and does anyone know what the timeing should be set at for unleaded?

Cheers folks

Get it to a garage and get them to check the timing and ignition to see if it's retarded or advanced. You could also check to see if any vacuum hoses have split. Shouldn't cost a lot.

Like you, I've just replaced my plugs (recommend Bosch Super 4's), HT leads (Electraspark) and dist cap (OEM VAG) and had the timing done and it's worked miracles. It's like a new car.

has it been running rough since weather went cold? could be carb freezing mate, common problem with 'big block' engines. worth checking carb gaskets in good fettle too.  no need for four pin plugs like, 1 electrode does the job on carb engines they dont suck enough air through to allow for unburnt fuel. is it pierburg carb?

Carb freezing - good call.

You might want to check the pull-down valve on the inlet pipe that starts just behind the rad and goes into the carb. There should be a black plastic 'box' half way along with a pipe running into it from the exhaust manifold. This feeds warm air into the carb when cold. A thermo-something-or-other opens and closes the valve inside the box to determine whether cold or hot air should be drawn in depending on the engine temperature.

Only prob is, this breaks so you may be constantly sucking in cold air. Simple fix is to have a poke around in this box and screw the valve closed so you constantly draw in warm air. Or, replace the unit but they are a bit pricey. From experience I've never had carb icing since, and despite running on warm air in summer and winter it really doesn't make a difference.

Hoses ok and going to check the timing, a mate keeps forgetting the timing light

ran ok, slight hesitation when put your foot down and when driving. passingers could not notice but i could. did not bother me that much tho. Weather hot or cold not a problem. all the time i have had her the choke would stick abit when cold till you give her a blip when warm then off she goes but thats norm. thinks its a pierburg.

I have sorted the idle out, found that yesterday. air filter gasket had come off, sitting right on top of my inlet manifold. i do a 30 mile trip every day and she was still there.

Runs OK for now, need to check the timing out still and shes still running hot but the timing will sort it out.

Main reason i changed the points was because it had rained quite bad and seemed like i had damp in me cap. cut out coughed and splatted never done this before. got it home and next day when dry it was fine. fine for a week then more rain. it was OK but it pi$$ed down and done the same.

So the out come is:

Idle OK, need to check timing to reduce heat etc. Rain baby rain to see if new points have helped a damp cap. Bring on summer for me install of the 16v

cheers
