REV LIMITER

Hi all, I am new to the site and would like to say hello,
I have owned a 96 2.0 gti for about 4 years now, but I have a problem with the rev limiter which cuts in at 5000 rpm instead of 6-6500rpm, any ideas to what is the cause?
Have been told it could be a solid state unit on the distributor, or could it be a sensor problem or ecu, any info would be appreciated.

not sure ont he rev limiter on these, take the dizzy cap off if its a spring loaded rotor arm then probably its knackered and cutting in too early, if not im not sure, there should b esome mk3 dudes about shortly who can help!!!

Yeah that how they did it on the earlier Golf's.......the spring used to weaken so the ignition was cut sooner. I'd be suprised if its still done the same way.........

Unusual for the engine management to fail and bring in the rev limiter early :-\. Is the rev counter reading correct, have seen a blocked cat that made a car missfire at high revs like a limiter.

I think the rev limit is controlled by the ECU on these cars, maybe a faulty engine speed(RPM) sensor.

Cheers for the replies, I don,t think it is anything to do with the distributor, but does the rpm sensor just send the signal to the ecu, where is the rev counter picking up from.
Also the blocked cat maybe a possibility, it happens dead on 5000rpm every time, I find it strange that a sensor may have failed but still manages to get the ecu to cut the engine out at  lower revs, the rev counter in the car is reading correct.

Try unplugging the rpm sender. I'm not sure if the engine will work without it, but worth a try to see if this whats causing the problem.

it will be controled by the ecu and on newer cars they dont have dizzy caps they have an electronic dizzy which is solid state and doesnt wear out.

also your gti will have a diagnostic code system on it!
take it to the dealer and let them check the fault codes if a senders down it will show up as a fault code!
