Cos drivers still have the piping leading down to an airbox down on the drivers wing. Either that or i am very confuddled.

mine had the filter in a box above the carb

you should have a flimsy pipe that connects your main airbox to a silly airbox thing on the wing, but they often missing

Nope, the airbox is ontop of the carb itself.  Drilling holes in it would increase your engine noise, but also the ammount of warm air sucked in from the engine bay, not that it matters that much on a driver as the warm air feed is open 99.9% of the time anyway!

i drilled my drivers air box, took the stupid piece of piping that goes into the wing, left the piping that goes to the exhaust manifold, when summer comes i have a some cold air feed i'll run to where i have drilled the holes,

Makes sweet f.a difference to performance, but sounds louder and more throatier under full throttle, especially under load, ie up hills.

I have seen driver engine bays with the piping leading down to a box on the wing, albeit not as bigger box as on the GTIs but still there.

i have a mk2 1.6 driver, and there is piping leading down to the right wing
