Any advice on this.....
« on: 06 March 2006, 22:29 »
All, would be grateful of any advice on the below.

Had my mk4 Golf GT TDI 150 for a while now on 03 plate, love the car etc etc.  Warrenty expired & MOT was due at end of Jan and passed no problems, car has been serviced fully by VW dealer.  I went to the same dealer at the end of Feb for an Interim service and was completely shocked and P'd off when the lad came over to me with £850 worth of repairs on the car:  These were

1, cambelt change £422 (car only done 50k they said VW guides are 40k - rubbish)
2, turbo pipe seal leaking £60 (they replaced the turbo pipe last year under warrenty)
3, EGr Valve leaking £260
4, + other smaller issues.

I'm so p'd off with this and have been on to VW customer care who have basically said go away, even though car is just out of warrenty !!!!!  The local VW dealer, who I won't name, have acted completely incompetent and seem like they have done the rogue trader trick on me.  They have quite a bad name and just wish I'd have listened to other advice first.  What do I do from here?

I'm thinking of cutting my bills on this car and owning a Ferrari instead!!!!!

Ok, first of all you should know that the stealerships rip you off !
They have spotted (maybe genuine) faults that MIGHT cause problems in the future, and are probably not needed now. They have a habit of inspecting a car to perfect showroom standards, when it might only be 'wear & tear' of the car.
I had the same treatment when I took a 4 year old Vauxhall to the stearship for a service. They came back to me with 'genuine' faults that were unessessary at the time.
If you're worried go to a trustworthy independant specialist. They are less likely to screw you to the ground. Just had my cambelt & tensioner done. Every 60k.
To be fair, if your car has been well looked after there should be less problems with a diesel than a petrol car.
There are more problems though with the MK4's than earlier models. This is because MK4 era Vw bought seat and skoda. They concentrated less on quality control and churned out a mass fleet car market to compete with ford and vauxhalls.
Hope this helps !

parts have a two year warranty so that turbo pipe seal should have been covered at least?

thats harsh mate

i would just be persistant and kick up more of a fuss, as dom said surely the turbo pipe seal should of been underwarrenty.

Did they just do the work or did they tell u about it first? surely theyre supposed to tell u if they have to do any more work than u originally planned.

I said exactly the same thing to the dealer who told me that any parts they replace under warrenty dont carry a warrenty!!!  Like I said, they have a bad name and I wont be using them again.

The one thing I dopped a bo***ck on was agreeing them to do the work, but as you'll agree when someone tells you your cambelt needs doing you crap yourself and get it done.  I dont have a leg to stand on due to this and i've even asked to see the cambelt but they gave me an obvious answer, thrown it away!!!!!!

I did some ringing round sfter to some other VW who all said that cambelt should be done at 60k not 40k and was given a £80 less quote.   Yeah was f'in p'd off with it all.  Cant believe VW have a different price policy between different dealerships, seems crazy that I could of got the job done twelve miles away at a VW dealer for 80 quid less.  A quote at a non VW dealer was 250 quid less.  Oh well....

Thanks for your reply guys, nice to see some folk know their stuff on Golfs.  Cheers.
