Cylinder head?

Hello all,

I'm new to this forum but I've read it from time to time & I have to say its very informative & quite often very funny, especially when there's differences of opinion

Anyway, I have a '92 8V which has done 130K & its starting to drink oil & smoke from the exhaust when idling, I thought it was the oil stem seals but I've been told it could well be the stems themselves :'(

Does anybody know where a new (standard) cylinder head can be bought for a reasonable price or would I be better off having my head recon'ed??

Any help would be appreciated.

Valve stem oil seals is a common failure however, if it is the guides themselves, you can get them replaced. Not sure on cost but I would imagine its got to be a lot cheaper than a replacement head.

Do a compression test, if the pressures are high then the oil seals have gone. If the compression is low, add a tea spoon of oil, if there is no improvement then the guides are probably knackered, if there is an improvement then you might be looking at knackered piston rings/bores.

Easiest answer is get someone to drive behind you and watch the smoke from the exhaust, constant all the time is rings, on over run and between gear changes is valve seals.
