Help choosing a Mk4

My original plan of getting a PD130 (150 if poss) to do my daily commute of 25miles each way on A and B-roads is potentially going out the window and some views would be good.

With a budget of £8k tops, the TDIs out there, in the majority, have around 90k-100k miles, fair enough and i'm sure there's life left in there, but it does seem high.  i could drop a spec to the 115bhp, not keen.

For the fuel savings i was working out that it could be better to get a lower mileage 1.8T, but at a few £grand less asking price.  Bearing in mind i'm going to have to get a loan to buy it anyway, the re-payments would be cheaper, but economy not as great.

Any advice would be good?

Hi.  If you can afford the purchase price and petrol for a 1.8T, go for it. 

In January 2004 I bought my S Reg (1999) 1.8 20v Normally Aspirated GTI with 43K miles for £7K. 
This model is 125bhp, 0-60 in 9s.  I'm quite pleased with it, and regularly get 40+mpg on my motorway commute.

I think you're right - stick with petrol.  spotted quite a few other threads about a similar topic, apologies for repeating it all.  Never knew it was a common problem.

On the hunt for a decent 1.8T now once my Mk2 is sold.

Great minds think alike! - Just been going through the same thought process as you and with a similar budget!

Starting to look a 1.8T's myself as when you work out the fuel saving over the year, its really not that much on a lowish mileage.

just some food for though but i got my TDI 130 with 56K on the clock on a 51 plate.  it had brand new MOT, cambelt done at 49K, practically new tyres all round, full VWSH.

they are out there - just a question of hunting for them!!

end of the day though the decision is yours

id have an anni TDI over my 1.8T too...

i like doing 50mpg!

Yeah but they just sound so bad!

Guess I'm biased as I only do 10mls per day to work and back!

Yeah a remaped tdi 150 will piss over a 1.8t and still do 45mpg
