I have a mark2 golf 8v(H reg) and im having problems when we have a big rain sesion and that is my passenger foot well is filling up with water and i cant find any evidence around i have a sun-roof and that seems fine. the worst problem is it smells like eggs in the car and my missus wont go in it because it makes her reach!! i suppose thats the sound-proofing soaked in rain water. Has any one had this problem if so wheres it comming from cheers ???

Are you sure it is not your heater matrix leaking?

Rain water is probably entering through you bonnet release handle. Water could be running down the bonnet release cable and into the foot well area.

If that is the problem just get some sealant and fill the area near the ECU cover

Hope that helps :)

Hmm problem is Blue MK2 he said it was the passenger side and not the drivers side.. I have a MK2 and my bonnet release is on the drivers side.

Sounds to me like a problem with ingress from something stupid like a wing mount aerial that enters the car from the side, door seal leaking, or something more common that I have heard of is under the scuttle tray on the passenger side is the heater fan.  If the drainage for this is blocked then it builds up and trickles down into the heater fan and eventually drops into the passenger well.  Have a look around that area and see if that is the cause, if not then its the newspaper trick on the carpet and see where the drips are in the morning !!

Hope this helps

Paul :)

I'm a newbie today aswell
But I know exactly what you need to do to stop it happening
I had the exact same problem. with water in the passenger footwell after it p**seddown with rain
The simple thing to check is wether the bottom of your door card is wet? if so:
The problem is that the membrane inside the door is no longer stuck down properly
Perhaps you have had a window replaced or some internal door mechanism sorted recently, when somebody has had to take out the membrane to get to it. either that or it has come unstuck due to old age.
Any way to fix it, you will need to take the door card off, and dry the internals of the door off properly to allow it to be restuck down either with silicone sealant or using Duck tape.
If the membrane has been riped appart by some ham fisted mechanic then you will need to replace them with new plastic. I Used rubble sacks from B&Q as they were thicker, cut them to size by using the originals as a template and stuck them on with gaffer tape, and hey presto no more puddles!
I hope this is of some use as before i discovered this i spent a fortune on new door seals, window seals, seam sealer on the floor and spent ages checking all the seals etc when I came across the membrane loose inside the door card.
This was because I had a new window fitted and they didn't bother to stick it back!

Check the door cards as mentioned above but also dont forget to check the gromets on the bulkhead, The right hand drive golf has a massive gromet on the left side where the servo goes on a left hand drive car. It is so easy to knock it off.

Also one thing to check is the two drain hole rubbers from the scuttle area are clear of leaves as this get blocked and rain fills up high enough till it enters the heater. Has it only started doing it since autumn started?

also check where the wind screen wiper arm connects to bulkhead as the seal around there can crack . i had the same problem.
