What do i buy...Driver/gti

theres only so much you can do with a driver wthout spending loads, altho all ive one with mine is the exhaust and a refubed carb(not a weber) and mine does 0-60 in 9 secs, may not be far off a standard gti8v but then you can get alot more out of a gti when theyre done up properly,a drivers a perfectly respectable car tho mate, good thing is is you do up the exteriour of a driver , when you get a gti you just need to swap over all the good parts then your sorted and you can sell the driver on

There are quite a few Drivers around that have been very well looked after - its a Mums car after all. Get a 1.8 and drop in a GTi cam, Weber carb and GTi exhaust and it's as quick as a GTi. Biggest problem with a cheap GTi is find one thats worth having, most are shagged and you'll be buying a world of hurt. Good ones are expensive for a reason. I looked at a few GTis described as good before getting a J plate Driver with the cam and carb done for £300 with 9 mths MOT. Very late Drivers have all the toys - Central locking, PAS, Sunroof and '90 spec arches and side strips. So a set of wheels and 40mm drop springs and it'll look the business. If you find a good GTi get it, but don't go looking without taking someone who knows them it easy to disguise a lemon.

I always wanted a GTI after my cousin bought one, i was 21 when i got my Driver but i rushed into it! As it happens it turned out to be a good oine so ive kept it and built a GTI replica.





If i were you id get a Driver to start with, dont spend too much money on it and keep it tidy (dont chav it up- it will loose so much value) then when insurance is cheaper get a mint GTI and sell driver on!

ask around, some companies do what they call bonus accelerator policies (i think thats right ) you get a 6 month policy at a little less than the cost of a 12 month but it gives you a full years no claims 

So if you started the insurance today you'd get your next policy in 6 months with a years no claims discount - it works out cheaper in the long run, well as long as you dont crash

Definitely go straight in for a GTI, you'll only end up spending the money you saved on a Driver trying to make it look like a GTI!

On what? Front and rear spoilers and a couple of badges (if you must) Or really push the boat out and spend £50 on some big bumpers.
If I'd have found a good (as in not thrashed to death or worn smooth or Maxpowered) GTi with PAS and central locking for £300 and plenty of MOT I'd have bought it. Good GTis are now sadly few and far between and finding one will take patience unless you want to spend good money.

Be very wary of these policies.  Mate of mine used to be a broker and said he would not go near them with a barge pole.  Unfortunately I found out why when my wife tried to swap from hers (a well known jewel of a company) to a more established company who gave her a better quote.  She had 10 months NCD (a year to Ruby) but when the other company found out it was not a 12 month policy they backed out.  As did plenty of others.  Eventually she managed to switch but her first insurer was realy picky over a no-fault claim and she nearly lost the accelerated bonus.

Won't make that mistake again.  Pay the extra few £Â£Ã‚£- pay peanuts and.......

Mine was with the AA and kwik-fit had no problems when i changed to them
