What do i buy...Driver/gti

Howdy there.

I'm recently turned 18 y/o Student from Kent. And i want a VW.

I currently drive a Red Peugeot 106 R Reg, but looking to sell it and pay off finance and get a VW.

So I have the  Golf 1.8 MkII driver in mind, good idea? there's a few cleans one for sale round here for under 5-hundred quid. This would result in no change (1500 quid..) in insurance until May  (when i get NCB and it should drop) to around 700.

OR

Buy a Golf 8v Gti for May and insure it for 1300 quid in May.

Having cheaper insurance would be good.I'm not rich   

What's the difference in Top speed and 0-60mph between the two?

If i choose the Driver I can buy one as soon as next week.

Please help me decide,

Hold off until May and buy the GTI. Or better still, spend between now and May finding the beat GTI you can. There is not much point in buying a half way house car that you will probably end up dropping money on. Keep your pug until you can get cheaper insurance. If you buy the Driver you will not be satisfied as you will still be hankering after the GTI.

I'm in a similar situation: i'm 19 in april (not long now!!!) and am going to be looking at about 800 quid tpf&t on an 8v gti, which isn't half bad! You're only going to be waiting 2 months, i've been waiting a year for this to happen, and looking back it's gone pretty quick!

I bought the car in January after keeping an eye out for a bit, and like the hoax said, start looking now for the best you can get as then you definitely won't be dissapointed.

yeah if i was thinking strait i would have got a gti instead of my driver as i can afford to, but then again its quite nice paying 45 pounds a month for the driver, not a bad 0-60, i do it in 9 secs and thats a 1600, the advantages of a driver is that so im told, they are easyer to keep running well?? mostly cause most problems youll get with the running are useually simple carb problems, also you find more drivers in good nick then gti`s  apparently, but if you can find a good gti then definatly mate, i know i will be next year if i can find a decent one

id get the GTi  and i think your guess of your insurance cost halving after getting one years no claims bonus is a dream.  not gonna happen.  you may save 200 at tops  and even then id doubt that.  if yor insurance compnay are telling you that then they ripped you off for 1500 quid in the first year

Seems to be normal to be honest. All of my mates insurance more or less halved after the 1st years no claims, myself included. However, people i know getting there second years no claims get around a hundred quid off like you say, maybe a bit more if they are lucky.

yeah mine did too, my first year of isurance was a 50% off as i had pass plus which only lasts one year and my second year cost about the same with no pass plus and one NCB, i suppose it depends who your with,

My insurance will drop to 800 on the Pug. The insurance told me this. The 1500 first year was cheapest quote I could find.

Sensible option  : Buy clean Driver, keep it for 15 months (youll hopefully 2 years NCB), and try not to spend much on it. Save up
then get a mint GTI later. Makes more sense for the purse strings Im afraid, but then youll end up with a great GTI in super nick.

More Fun option: Bite the bullet, find the best possible GTI you can for your budget, and learn everything you can about them so if work needs doing you can get it done for less $$$. Become obsessed, spend every penny you have on it, and dont forget to use Optimax!!! Then start planning your mods/improvements.

Performance figures... i think from Haynes Max Power Golf manual
1.8 Driver: 0-60 = 10.1 secs, Top speed = 108 mph
1.8 GTI 8v (pre '88): 0-60 = 8.5 secs, Top speed = 118 mph
1.8 GTI 8v (post '88): 0-60 = 9.2 secs (umm not sure), Top speed = 118 mph

And Id hate to sound nosey, but youre almost 18 still a student, I guess if your starting work come autum you may be in a better position to run and maintaine the GTI, however if uni is your route it may change things (need of car, location, etc).
I ran a mk3 1.4 SE (fat and slow, but it served me well) for my first year to get 1years NCB and 1years experience, then moved onto GTI, but being 23/24, oh and married makes insurance cheaper.

I was 18 last month, got a year and half left of college (living at home) then I may go Uni after that but again will be at home.

Foxhole : your GTI is absolutely gorgeous.

Would another option be by a Driver (therefore cheap insurance and so on) then modify it to the spec of a GTI?

I mean air filter, full system exhaust will give it tiny more power, what kind of things could i do on not much money to make it go? New carb?  .... also I plan on stripping the inside to get rid of some weight.

There is only 1.5 secs in it...

I live on about 600 a month (part time work and generous relatives ) and have other expensive hobbies..I'm a guitarist,that seems to eat my money.
