Exhaust noise
« on: 21 November 2003, 12:49 »
I finally picked up my 91 8v Gti today and it is great except one thing, the exhaust noise!

I know it's hard to gauge how loud something is but the exhaust noise is louder than the radio by far.

The exhaust is not blowing and it is a genuine VW, could there be anything that is making the exhaust noisier, can I do anything to quieten it down?

It is so annoyingly loud I'm not sure I can stick with the car.

does it have all the silencers on it? or has one been removed in favour of a straght thru section

an 8v should have 3 silencers from the downpipe back

Something's definately not right there - the standard system should be really quiet with a slight almost 'humm' to it ....

Are u sure the system is complete and someone's not done away with the resonator box or something?

Also although it's not blowing that's not to say the internals aren't 100% as baffles do rot !

Have to checked right up to the manifold too for blows ?

Are you 100% it's a standard system too ??

Thanks for the quick response, I will check all these.

I'm pretty sure the exhaust system is standard, the car was one owner from new and an elderley guy had it.

If u need a new one, replacement standard exhausts are cheap as chips...

Does anyone know how much a genuine VW one will set me back?

I've got a Bosal one on mine and it sounds really nice for the first 2/3 months and now fairly noisey. In the last 2 years I've replaced the Back and front silencers @

Back: ?59
Front : ?23

From memory I think that's how much they were. Purely so I can say standard exhaust and air filter ;D

Just got a 91H 8v myself last weekend and took it for a free exhaust inspection at kwikfit, as I too thought it quite throaty!. Nothing needed replacing (as if id let THEM do it anyway!!) but one of the rubber hangers had snapped which meant the rear end of the system was sitting on the axle :o They replaced this for me for nowt which has resulted in a noticable reduction in noise.

Hope this helps

Hehe first thing that sprang to my mind is that the elderly are normally loosing their hearing so he/she couldn't hear it !! ;)

Secondly when I got mine last week I thought the same thing, but its funy how quickly you become accustomed to the noise and now I can hardly hear it !

Normally about 70mph I hear a low drone but apart form that its fine now.. I have heard that Ernst exhaust are good and last for a good while, far better than other after market exhaust, but who am I to know being a newcomer to the VW regime :)

The exhaust on mine was banging on the axle so I had to get new rubbers to lift it back up, it does make a huge difference to the amount of noise transmitted into the car.
