Car lacks power, any ideas?

Ok so my 8v lacks power sometimes. However it's easily fixed by switching the ignition off and then on again while moving. Bob's your fathers brother things are great. Maybe an hour later power drops off again so repeat the off/on procedure and again all is good.

Sound like a dodgy ECU or should I be looking for something else?

Something electrical that is jolted by being turned off and on, maybe hall sender? Or coil? or a relay somewhere? something in that neck of the woods. I wouldn't have thought the blue temp sensor (sorry Ben!) as this won't cure itself by turning off and on.  :smiley:

I'd do the blue ECU temp sender anyway for piece of mind, only £13 from VW.  My girlfirends MK3 Polo used to run sluggish randomly, then eventually kick in, solved with a new blue ECU temp sender :)

Other than that I'd think about possibly a worn fuel pump relay, partially clogged fuel filter or perhaps dodgy/loose connections to the pump.

Do the easy things 1st ;)

I agree also, try the blue temp sender, it could just be failing intermittently.

sounds to me like something is blocked IE vacuum or fuel .  its ok until it begins to struggle.  what about the fuel tank.  dont they draw in air to stop the tank caving in on itself when the petrol is removed buy the pump?  this would happen over a period as the fuel is used the pump cant pull any more through? do they have an air pipe that could be partially blocked?  (i had a motorbike that used to do the axact same thing for this very reason.  one toothpick fixed it in an instant and the bike was soo much quicker)  just throwing a few ideas in to the pot for you

I want to know why it could be the blue temp sensor!

All the electrics are good and new (Dizzy cap, Leads, plugs, rotor arm) and known to be be working well.

This problem (along with knackered clutch and no heating) mean I can't drive the beast with a smile on my face!

Actually I can't drive it at all as it's sorn'd at the moment, but hey!

blue temp sensor send signal to ECU

switching on and off cuts signal to blue temp sensor, hence resetting ecu in process
