Engine Sputters at high revs
« on: 13 May 2003, 02:15 »
I've noticed that several folks have or had the same problem I'm experiencing. Engine runs fine but will sputter during hard acceleration or at 5200rpm during normal acceleration. I'd appreciate any feedback specially from folks who had this prob and got it fixed.

So far I've read that prob might be a timing crystal or the more typical spots like the rotor/cap, coil, plugs or leads. I just got the car so I haven't had a chance to check the ignition system yet. Curious to know if the timing crystal is an expensive part to replace??

New to the water-cooled VW scene, so any help would be appreciated. I have a E-reg golf gti 16v.

The timing crystal is what my problem was.

Easiest way to check it is to find a mate with a GTI, and do a quick swap. You will be able to rule it out - or in - just by starting the engine.

Use a GTI cystal. 8 and 16v use the same. Apparently.

If it is that, you may be able to source a cheap Lucas part - test it. The Lucas part never worked on mine - depsite G&S "testing" it, whilst the VAG sourced part worked perfectly.

Can't remember the name of it, but you'll find it in the engine bay, under drivers wiper.
